Bibendum Chair, The Chair Of The 21st Century
Eileen Gray an Irish furniture designer was born in 1878, she developed a special skill in contemporary furniture designing by blending the classical and modern trend. She successfully managed to initiate a new school of thought in design industry. Bibendum Chair was one of her best creation, proved to be one of the most popular designer chairs in the 20th Century. The design of this chair is unique, the arms and the backrest of the chair are made of two leather cushions. These are tube like cushions set one on top of other in a semi circle position. These two tube-like cushions, rests on a third big cushion used as the seat of the chair. Finally the set of cushions are fitted on metal frame, forming the base of the chair. This large sized chair is mainly used for lounge purposes to relax with ultimate comfort. You can also have a contemporary coffee table that suit with this Bebendum Chair very well.
Originally, this chair was designed for Madame Mathieu Levy, owner of a famous boutique, especially dealing with women’s hat. Levy entrusted Gray to design her new villa, its interior and its furniture too. It took 4 years for Gray to accomplish the work. The most remarkable creation of her task was the Bibendum Chair. She herself named the Chair, influenced by a character created by Michelin to promote the marketing of tires. Today the Bibendum Chair is recognized as one the masterpieces in the history of modern furniture.
